A Quick Review of the Awesome Accommodations in Italy I Stayed in 2023
As I traveled around in summer 2023, I was fortunate to stay in some amazing accommodations in Italy — a couple that I had stayed in before plus some new places.
While I’m not super picky about where I stay, I do believe good accommodation can make or break your trip — or at least your impression of a certain destination.
So in this post, I want to offer up a quick overview of each one, hitting some of the features of it, and giving you my honest opinion.
Palazzo Gelmi — Verona, Veneto
I stayed in this 3 room B&B in 2014.
And I returned in 2023.
It says something if I stayed here before and came back to stay again.
My first stay was just 2 nights while this time I stayed an entire week.
Palazzo Gelmi has an ideal location right next to Verona’s famous Arena and Piazza Bra.
It’s housed up a flight of stairs in what was a palazzo or a very nice, swanky building.
The rooms are large and decorated with period furniture but you’ll find very modern bathrooms.
My favorite part is that there are frescoes(!) on the walls.
They’re stunning!!
Breakfast is included and is made to order.
Lodovica, the host, made sure I had some gluten free options for some sweet, baked goods.
I really appreciated this.
She is a wealth of knowledge of the area so she’ll offer up ideas for your time in Verona.
The price is reasonable as well so in my opinion, this is an excellent choice for staying in this magnificent Italian city.
Price: €120-150 for a double room, €150-180 for a triple room and €80-100 for double room for single use
What I love about it: The interesting and large rooms, Lodovica, the location and the price — which is really good for a large room in a city like Verona.
What I don’t love about it: Because of the great location, it can be a bit noisy!
Weisshauserhof — San Michele-Appiano, Südtirol
This was my first time staying in this area which is just south of Bolzano.
I had made a visit to Caldaro which is just a bit south of San Michele-Appiano in 2019 and decided I needed to stay here to explore more.
This is a wine growing region that I really have come to like — a lot!
I had a difficult time finding a place in early-mid June for some reason.
But when I did, I think I found a hidden gem!
Weisshauserhof is located just a little under 2km / 1.25mi from the center of the village of San Michele.
This accommodation is technically a farm stay, an agriturismo, as it has grapevines as well as fruit growing all around it.
The location is perfect as you can walk into the village, yet it is quiet out amongst the vines and fruit trees.
This is not a B&B or hotel, but rather Weisshauserhof has holiday apartments.
This means you have a small kitchen with table and chairs along with a bedroom.
Some of the apartments have a couch/seating area along with the kitchen area.
There are 5 different apartments and all have a balcony or terrace.
Annalore is your host and she is wonderful!
Her English is marginal but she is warm and friendly and just delightful.
I think this is now on the list of my favorite accommodations in Italy.
Price: From €80 to €116 depending on the apartment. Prices will be higher during high season.
What I love about it: The location, the ability to make/cook your own food, Annalore (she is such a sweet person) and having a balcony or terrace.
What I don’t love about it: I actually can’t think of a single thing!
Paradiso Pure Living — Alpe di Siusi, Südtirol
For my 2023 trip to Südtirol, I knew I wanted to stay up in Alpe di Siusi.
There aren’t a lot of choices, but when I found Paradiso Pure Living I knew I found THE place.
I was hoping it lived up to my expectations — and it did!
This hotel is actually a vegetarian/vegan hotel.
And the price you see includes your breakfast (a buffet) and dinner which is 5 courses.
Adult beverages are extra.
The food is all plant based and locally sourced (as much as possible) and if you are fully vegan, they will ensure that this is how you eat.
So Paradiso Pure Living is not for you meat eaters out there or those that absolutely have to have meat every day.
Rooms are simple, yet very comfortable and all have a balcony with views of the Dolomite peaks.
There is a spa area as well with a gym, saunas, a steam room, salt water indoor pool and an outdoor whirlpool (jacuzzi).
Plus they have yoga classes.
And, to be honest, for all you get, the price is reasonable.
I fell in love with this accommodation!
Even though it is a hotel, it’s not huge so you don’t feel like a number.
The staff are fabulous and will take good care of you.
I think this has become one of my favorite accommodations in Italy.
Price: From €174 to €238 depending on the room/suite. Prices will be higher during high season.
What I love about it: Well, the location, of course as you have access to the trails of Alpe di Siusi and you can see the sun rise and set on the Dolomite peaks. The food is delicious and the spa is a treat. The bar is cool. And the deck out front with the views of the Sasso Piatto and Sasso Lungo? Aweseome!!
What I don’t love about it: I actually can’t think of a single thing!
Hof zu Fall — San Valentino-Castelrotto, Südtirol
Like Palazzo Gelmi, this is the second time I’ve stayed at Hof zu Fall.
And like Weisshauserhof, this is an agriturismo with apartments rather than rooms.
Again, the fact that I returned to this agriturismo says something.
This accommodation has 5 apartments of various sizes.
It sits in the community of San Valentino which is above the town of Siusi allo Sciliar and is a couple of kilometers from Castelrotto.
But while it is away from these towns, Hof zu Fall has amazing views of the Sciliar (Scherln).
This is a true working farm with cows right out your door.
As such, you can get that “cow” smell.
The apartments are lovely with lots of wood, small-ish yet functional kitchens, and balconies for soaking up the sun — and the views.
Michaela is the host and you’ll see her and her husband, Joachim, the farmer as well.
They speak a little bit of English, but not much.
But you get by!
This really is a marvelous spot with superb holiday apartments at a reasonable price.
Hof zu Fall has become one of my favorite accommodations in Italy — I do love it!
Price: From €50 to €135 depending on the apartment and season.
What I love about it: The views! It’s a fabulous location for sunrise and sunset over the Schlern! All the wood in the apartments.
What I don’t love about it: Just the smell of the cow dung.
Hotel Olympia — San Vigilio di Marebbe, Südtirol
My story of my first stay at Hotel Olympia can be found in this post.
Needless to say, I love it here as I’ve now stayed 4 times.
Although it’s a hotel, Hotel Olympia is a small, family run hotel.
And while the location is amazing, it’s truly the family and the staff they have that make this hotel so special.
Don’t get me wrong, the rooms are fantastic, the views to the village and the Dolomite peaks are awesome and the food is delicious.
Plus the great bar, the spa area and the places to sit out front on a nice day.
But the family is absolutely the best!
You will leave feeling like you are part of the family — Marco, his wife Fabiana and daughter Camilla.
Like Paradiso Pure Living, this hotel has half board so the price includes breakfast and dinner.
And I think it’s a good deal.
The breakfast buffet is fantastic and the 4 course meals that starts with an antipasti buffet — which I could have made a full meal out of — really add to the value.
Seriously, this is one of my absolute favorite accommodations in Italy.
Actually it is probably one of my favorite accommodations — anywhere!
Price: From €90 to €100 per person per night depending on the room and season.
What I love about it: The location with its views in a few different directions. The breakfast buffet, the dinners (they’re an event) and the comfortable rooms. But mostly the family. I love them!!
What I don’t love about it: The spa is only open late day to just before dinner. Although I think if you asked, Marco might open it up for you.
El Sangon — Canazei, Trentino
As I made my way into new destinations, I found myself in the Trentino/Trento province of the greater Trentino-Alto Adige region.
Canazei was the town I chose in the Val di Fassa (good choices) and El Sangon seemed like a nice guesthouse.
Another good choice!
This guesthouse has 10 rooms of varying sizes spread over a couple of floors.
The rooms are clean, simple yet very comfortable.
I had a wee single room that was small, but still had plenty of storage space for a long term traveler/digital nomad like me.
Plus I had a balcony with a view toward some amazing Dolomite peaks!
Aline is your host and she is warm, caring, full of knowledge of the area and she speaks good English.
Breakfast is delicious as well with a buffet and made to order hot food.
And yes, Aline catered to my gluten sensitivity.
I think El Sangon has been added to my list of favorite accommodations in Italy.
Price: From €55 to €73 per person per night depending on the room and season.
What I love about it: The location is excellent as it’s right near the Belvedere gondola lift as well as being right in the heart of town without the noise. Aline is absolutely wonderful. And the price is really good.
What I don’t love about it: I can’t think of anything!
Hotel Garni Suisse — San Martino di Castrozza, Trentino
I wanted to stay near Parco Naturale Paneveggio Pale di San Martino so I decided on the town of San Martino di Castrozza.
There are a lot of places to stay and some of them were quite pricey.
I settled on Hotel Garni Suisse due to its location, its price and it had decent reviews.
I will be honest and say it was my least favorite of the accommodation I stayed at while in Italy.
The location is outstanding, being right in the center of town without being noisy.
The rooms were just a bit more basic and dated.
I felt like I wanted to give it a wee makeover.
My room did have a nice balcony with superb views over the town, down the valley and to the stunning Dolomite peaks.
I loved that part!
Breakfast was ok.
Nothing spectacular but sufficient.
Elisabet is your host and she is very nice and helpful.
She really doesn’t speak much English which was ok.
We all know this happens and you just go with it.
For me, while it was a fine accommodation, I don’t know if I would stay again.
But for those on a budget, it certainly is an acceptable option.
Price: From €60 per person per night depending on the room and season. Prices are not listed on the website but you can see prices if you go to book. So check the website for exact information.
What I love about it: The location is ideal in the heart of town yet off the main road so it’s quieter. Views from the balcony are awesome. The price is good.
What I don’t love about it: Rooms feel a bit old, worn out and dated.
Villa Stecchini — Bassano del Grappa, Veneto
I decided to add a night here and stay 2 nights and am glad I did.
This is an old aristocratic villa that is still actually owned by the original family.
And it was recently opened as accommodation within the last couple of years.
It’s such a cool, historic structure with rooms filled with period furniture and old family photos.
Plus there are all the other parts of the villa with the gardens and patio, a small chapel and the Elfo Park — which may be for kids but that I rather liked!
There are 6 rooms/suites plus 1 apartment.
And each is unique and uniquely decorated.
Breakfast is included with your stay.
Carolotta is your host and the current generation of the Stecchini di Bassano-Venezia family.
She is a wonderful host, telling you a bit about her family plus offering up ideas for things to do in the area.
You can also eat dinner at the Villa by prior arrangement.
The food is delicious!
The staff at Villa Stecchini will also arrange for wine tastings, cooking classes or any outdoor experiences you may be up for.
And this fabulous villa is also available for special events including weddings.
Truly one of those special accommodations in Italy.
Price: From €100 per room depending on the room and season.
What I love about it: I love old, historic places like this so for me, the history of the family is very cool. Rooms are good-sized and the food is tasty!
What I don’t love about it: I can’t think of anything!
So there you have a snapshot of the accommodations in Italy from my 2023 journey.
Mostly these are places I would highly recommend.
Obviously, I have my favorites.
One place I want to add as just a quick recommendation, is the Courtyard by Marriott by the Venice Airport.
It’s very close to the airport and has good rooms for a quick night before an early morning flight.
