An Amazing and Hopeful Europe Travel Wishlist for 2022
As I promised in the last podcast episode I am going to share my Europe travel wishlist for 2022.
It’s my way of putting it out there and hopefully inspiring you a bit to create your own wishlist or introduce you to some new destinations.
I’ll be honest, I’m not sure all of this will happen but I am going to try.
COVID will have something to say about it I’m sure.
And my 91 year old dad — and his health — is the other wild card.
But I really wanted to put this out to you and to the Universe because sometimes when it’s out there — and not a secret — it has a better chance of happening.
At least that’s what I believe.
So here it goes — Lynne’s Europe Travel Wishlist for 2022.
A Scotland Road Trip
As I write this I’m down to just about 2 weeks left in Scotland and on this digital nomad journey.
And even though I’ve been in Scotland for 2 months, I haven’t traveled around a lot.
I’ve stayed put which has been great for really getting to know a micro area.
I opted not to rent a car to save a bit of money — especially given how pricey car hire is right now. 🤬
But I would LOVE to do a 2-3 month trip around Scotland.
I haven’t fully figured it out just yet, but know I will.
I’m thinking at least a week in each spot so I have time to slow down a bit and have time to work.
One thing I’ve learned over the past few years is that you can’t spend a couple of days in a spot and have time to both explore where you are and spend time in front of the laptop getting work done.
So I envision a long, slow trip with 1-2 weeks in each destination and exploring that area.
I would love to spend some time in the far north along the North Coast 500 for at least 2 weeks, as well as time in Glencoe, Speyside, Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders.
And I sooooo want to go back to Morar.
And Fife, of course.
The one island that is a must is Lewis and Harris.
But I’d love to visit 2 islands on this road trip so I’m contemplating a second Scottish island.
So a lengthy road trip around Scotland is the first item on my Europe travel wishlist for 2022.
A Month (or 2) in Ireland
I haven’t been to Ireland since 2018 so I am due for a trip to one of my favorite countries.
So spending at least a month in Ireland is the second trip on the Europe travel wishlist.
Like Scotland, I haven’t figured out where exactly I want to go, but I know it will be spending at least a week or 2 in each spot.
I think the number 1 destination for me is Kenmare and Killarney National Park.
If you read this blog, you know Kenmare is one of my favorite Irish towns.
But, oddly enough, I’ve only spent 3-4 nights here at the most.
So I want to spend at least a full week in Kenmare AND fully explore Ireland’s oldest national park.
Exploring more of County Mayo is also high on the list.
And I would love to get back to County Donegal.
But there are some places in the interior that intrigue me so I want to do some research and find an off the tourist track destination to dive into.
So stay tuned!
Germany for Christmas Markets
If you listened to the 2022 Travel Resolutions podcast episode then you know that visiting a new country in 2022 is one of my travel resolutions.
And I think visiting Germany during the festive Christmas season would be ideal so then I could wander about some Christmas markets drinking warm cider or mulled wine and just generally get into the holiday spirit.
I have to admit going to the German Christmas markets have been on my Europe travel wishlist for about 5 years now.
Maybe longer!
I was going to make this happen at the end of 2020 but then we all know what happened.
I didn’t even try to make this happen in 2021 because I wasn’t sure they would be open.
So, maybe 2022 will finally be the year.
I’ll tick something off my Europe travel bucket list AND see a new country.
South Tyrol for 2 Months
I absolutely love the South Tyrol province of northern Italy.
And I can’t seem to stay away from the gorgeous Dolomite peaks, the beautiful valleys, the charming villages and the intriguing history/culture.
The food and wine are pretty damn good too.
And the people are wonderful!
So I do plan to return to the Alto Adige part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy.
Now, there are some specific reasons why South Tyrol is on my Europe travel wishlist for 2022.
Yes, I love it.
But there are also some business reasons that I hope to tell you all about before 2022 ends.
Let’s just say I have some plans to do some new things here at Wander Your Way.
So I do hope you’ll stay tuned!
One piece of this trip that will definitely happen is to stay at least 2 weeks at Hotel Olympia in San Vigilio di Marebbe.
I made a promise that I would stay a lot longer than a few days on my next visit.
And I intend to keep my promise!
Walk a long distance trail
Another item that has been on my Europe travel wishlist for a few years is to walk another long distance trail.
This is also another one of my 2022 travel resolutions.
I’m not sure which trail and, to be honest, this is one of the items on my wishlist I’m not sure will come to fruition this year.
But I want to put it on the list.
My thought is it could be a trail in Scotland.
Perhaps something like the Fife Coastal Path or maybe the Borders Abbey Way which would be a wonderful way to see the abbeys in this part of Scotland.
The Fife Coastal Path is longer at 187km/116mi while the Border Abbey Trail is only 109km/68mi.
So if this experience on my Europe travel wishlist is going to happen, I think one of these makes the most sense given what else is on my list!
And lastly…
Attend The Open in St Andrews Scotland
I love watching the game of golf.
I know.
There is something wrong with me.
I don’t play, but I did grow up watching Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and female golfers like Nancy Lopez.
My dad has played since he was a kid.
So I watched it and learned a bit about the game.
I got away from watching it on TV when I lived in Colorado.
But since I moved back in with my folks almost 12 years ago, I got back into it.
And I just love so many of the young golfers.
It’s a fun way to spend some time with my Daddy-o too.
Anyway…
I decided to put my name in for tickets to the 150th Open Championship (some Americans might refer to it as the British Open but it’s proper name is The Open).
The 150th is taking place at the home of golf, St Andrews.
And I did get tickets — just for a practice round at this point.
But I’m hoping to get at least 1 ticket for one of the tournament days.
Fingers crossed I’m able to scour up one of these hard to get tickets.
However, I’m committed to going and I’m soooooo excited!!!!
Plus I get to see what St Andrews is like with all the crazy golf fans and see Bo and Eric — and Cora, of course.
