I definitely have my favorite travel products.
Those things I don’t leave without — no matter where I’m going or for how long.
So I want to start a series I’m calling “What’s in My Bag” where I share some of these travel products.
I often have travel clients ask me what they need for their trip — from clothing to other odds and ends such as toiletry items to ways to stay organized to apps for your phone.
I’ll try to roll out one of these posts every month or 2.
And each one will be based on a theme.
For the first “What’s in My Bag” post, let’s get organized!
Packing Cubes
I love packing cubes!
Seriously.
Best. Thing. Since. Sliced. Bread.
Ok.
An exaggeration.
But these are my absolute favorite travel product.
Let me give you my history with packing cubes.
I used to do a little bit of backpacking in my younger days.
When I was dating Colorado Boyfriend, we took some backpacking trips in Colorado, Utah, the Tetons in Wyoming and to the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
He kind of gave me hard time about how unorganized my backpack was.
I was kind of hurt by this.
But he was right — my backpack was a bit of a clusterfuck.
I was always digging around trying to find what I needed which usually meant taking everything out to find it.
So when I made that first trip overseas to Spain in 2005, I vowed to be more organized.
I went to REI and found Eagle Creek packing cubes.
And suddenly I was an organized packer.
It was a revelation.
I still have those same original 4 packing cubes I bought.
The boyfriend, however, is long gone!
So what are these and how do they work?
Well, most of the brands come in varying sizes — from full size to half cubes to quarter cubes.
And some will also have ways to compress your items.
Packing cubes are great for your clothing.
You can fold or roll — I think rolling works best — your clothing into these cubes.
Then you put those cubes into your suitcase, duffel or backpack.
It’s a bit of trial and error to get the best fit, so give yourself time to practice packing with them.
But, I can promise that once you use these, you’ll never go back to not using them.
The small packing cubes — such as the quarter sized and mini ones — are fabulous for things like bottles of medication, makeup or contacts.
Packing cubes keep you organized as you travel and help prevent misplacing things.
Cord/Charger Bag
This is a recent addition to my travel products I must have.
And I love it.
I never worry about losing a charger or cord as I move from place to place.
Each cord/charger has its spot in the bag and I always double-check it before I close it.
If I see that one spot doesn’t have its mate, then I know I’ve left something plugged in an outlet in the room or put it somewhere it doesn’t belong.
I encourage you to find the proper size charger pouch to fit your needs.
Since I’m working and have my laptop with me as well as my camera, I need a charger organizer to hold all that I need.
For many of you, your needs may not be as great so a smaller organizer will work.
I like the BagSmart brand.
While my exact model is no longer available as I think they’ve done some upgrades/changes, I do think this brand is a solid choice at a great price.
But shop around to find the best cord bag for you.
I know once you use one of these, you’ll be hooked!
Toiletry Kit
This is another of those travel products I cannot imagine traveling without.
I bought mine back in 2005 on that fateful trip to REI when I discovered packing cubes.
It’s the perfect size for me.
And I love that it has a hanger so I can hang it up on the back of a door or on a towel rack.
Again, I think you have to find the kit that works for you.
Some folks don’t take much in the way of personal care items or stay in places that have a lot of what they need/use.
A small toiletry kit is going to be great for you.
Other folks may take a wee bit more or travel for longer periods of time so they need a larger bag.
Consider your style of travel and how long you travel to determine the best toiletry kit for you.
But whatever you choose, I do highly recommend buying one that has the hangar. It’s such a wonderful feature to have especially because European bathrooms can have limited space.
Here’s a similar one to mine from Eagle Creek!
Reusable bottles/jars
The last of my favorite travel products to stay organized are reusable bottles and containers.
I’m a fan of the Nalgene brand.
You can find screw cap bottles, dropper bottles and screw top jars in varying sizes.
These are terrific to use for shampoo, lotion, aspirin or anything else you may need.
The GoToob are also quite popular, but are a bit more expensive.
Find the reusable bottles and jars that fit your needs.
Don’t be cheap as you want something that will last.
The great thing about using these travel products is that you eliminate some plastic usage by not buying the small travel sized shampoo or lotion.
So you’re being kind to Mother Earth.
The other fabulous aspect to these reusable bottles is that you’ll probably have them a long time.
I still have my original ones I bought in 2005!
4 travel products to keep you organized
Do you have some of these travel products?
If not — and you are preparing for a trip — I highly recommend them.
Staying organized as you travel helps alleviate stress as you travel and keeps you from losing things.
This way you simply focus on having a wonderful time.
And that’s why you’re on vacation!
