10 Places That Surprised Me in the Best Possible Way
We all have those destinations we think we know.
And then we get there and they completely win us over.
In this episode, I’m sharing a handful of places that surprised me in the very best way.
These are spots around Europe that went beyond my expectations and left a bigger impression than I ever imagined.
I’m talking about everything from the wild, rugged beauty of Ireland’s west coast to the storybook charm of York in England.
And yes, even Paris made this list because sometimes the most iconic places still manage to surprise you.
There are mountain regions that stole my heart, quieter corners that felt more magical than expected, and a few destinations that simply stayed with me long after I left.
This is a personal look at expectations vs. reality — and how some of the best travel moments happen when a place catches you off guard.
It’s also a reminder to leave a little room for the unexpected when you’re planning your own European adventure.
So now I’m curious… what are the places that surprised you in the best possible way?

10 Places That Surprised Me in the Best Possible Way
(For those who want to read)
Every now and then a destination completely catches me off guard — in the best possible way.
You go in thinking, “This should be nice.”
And then you leave thinking, “Wow! I want to come back.”
That’s exactly what this episode (and this post) is about — places that surprised me.
These are destinations around Europe that exceeded expectations, stuck with me long after I left, and in many cases pulled me back for another visit.
Most of these aren’t single sites.
They’re regions, towns or cities that worked their way into my heart.
And as I thought through this list of places that surprised me, one theme kept coming up — expectations.
Sometimes they were low.
Sometimes moderate.
And sometimes high and still exceeded.
Either way, these places delivered.

When “moderate expectations” turn into wow
A few of the biggest surprises came from places where I simply didn’t know what to expect — or didn’t expect to be blown away.
In fact, some of the biggest standouts on this list of places that surprised me were destinations I assumed would be “nice”.
And then turned out to be unforgettable.
Ireland — County Donegal and West Cork
County Donegal (especially the northern coast) and West Cork both landed firmly in the “I knew it would be nice… but not this nice” category.
Donegal’s coastline felt more dramatic than I imagined — headlands, beaches and that rugged Atlantic energy that just hits differently.
And West Cork?
Between the light, the peninsulas, the villages and the people, it quickly became a place I wanted to return to almost immediately.
Both ends of the country.
Both unforgettable.
Both very firmly on my personal list of places that surprised me in the best possible way.
Slovenia
Slovenia is one of those places that surprised me with how green, peaceful, and beautiful it is.
Forests everywhere, the Julian Alps, that unreal color of the Soča River… plus fantastic food and genuinely warm people.
It quickly became a destination I recommend — and dream about returning to.

Cities that won me over
As you know, I’m not a city person, which is probably why these made my list of places that surprised me.
Paris, France
Yes, Paris surprised me — in the best possible way.
Admittedly, I went in with pretty high expectations.
And still fell harder than I thought I would.
The architecture, the walking, the river, the cafés… it just clicked.
It remains my favorite city and one I happily return to whenever I can.
York, England
York is another of the places that surprised me.
I knew about the Minster and the history.
But I didn’t expect to love wandering the walls, exploring the Shambles, and soaking up the atmosphere as much as I did.
It’s a city that feels immersive and welcoming all at once.

Landscapes that took my breath away
Some of the most memorable places that surprised me were landscapes that simply resonated more deeply than I expected.
South Tyrol & the Dolomites
This one shouldn’t surprise you!
Seeing the Dolomites in person is something you don’t forget.
Photos don’t prepare you.
The first time I saw those jagged peaks, I was hooked.
South Tyrol quickly became one of those places that surprised me.
And it continues to draw me back again and again. (and again!)
Isle of Mull, Scotland
Mull surprised me because I didn’t go in with many expectations.
That made the mountains, coastline, beaches, and winding roads feel even more magical.
It’s a place I can’t wait to return to and explore more deeply.
And it’s a spot on the Island Odyssey: Scotland’s Hidden Shores 2026 tour!
The Peak District, England
I thought I’d like the Peak District.
I didn’t realize how much I’d love it.
Sheep-dotted hills, stone villages, walking paths everywhere.
It’s exactly the kind of landscape that makes me want to slow down and stay awhile.
Definitely one of the places that surprised me in recent years.

Small(ish) places that left a big impression
Not every destination on this list is a headline location.
In fact, a few of the places that surprised me most were smaller, quieter spots that didn’t come with big expectations.
But delivered in a big way once I arrived.
Krün, Bavaria, Germany
This tiny Bavarian village is one of those places that surprised me because I didn’t expect much beyond a pleasant base for exploring the Alps.
Instead it turned out to be a highlight.
Staying in a quiet village with open views to the mountains, easy walking trails right out the door, and genuinely warm local hospitality made it feel peaceful and authentic.
It reminded me that sometimes being just outside the “main” destination offers the best experience.
Normandy, France
Normandy is another of the places that surprised me.
I expected the D-Day sites to be powerful and moving.
And they absolutely were.
What I didn’t expect was how much I’d love the countryside beyond them.
Rolling green hills, apple orchards, charming villages, incredible cheese, and kind people made this region feel layered and welcoming.
It’s a place I’m already planning to return to so I can explore more deeply.
St. Andrews, Scotland
St. Andrews might be famous for golf, but it became one of the places that surprised me for entirely different reasons.
When I finally spent time there beyond a quick visit, I discovered a town with a wonderful mix of university energy, coastal beauty, historic ruins, and everyday local life.
Between the beaches, the cathedral remains, and the easy rhythm of the place, it quickly became somewhere I could happily linger — and even imagine living.

Final thoughts on the places that surprised me
Putting together this list of places that surprised me made me think a lot about expectations.
When we travel, we often assume we know how we’ll feel about a place.
But sometimes the destinations we’re unsure about end up being the ones we love most.
And that’s part of the joy of travel — leaving room to be surprised.
So now I’ll turn it to you.
What are the places that surprised you in the best possible way?
