The Most Beautiful Lakes in Europe (That I’ve Actually Visited!)
When you think about the most beautiful lakes in Europe, your mind might jump straight to the big names — Lake Como, Lake Geneva, maybe a crystal-clear alpine lake in Slovenia called Lake Bled.
And while a few iconic spots do make my list, I’m also shining a light on some that might not be on everyone’s radar … but should be.
Over the years, I’ve wandered my way to shimmering alpine waters, moody Highland lochs and peaceful lakes tucked into picturesque landscapes across Italy, Germany, Ireland and beyond.
These are places where the reflections are perfect, the air feels cleaner and time seems to slow down just a wee bit.
So if you’re looking to add a bit of lakeside serenity to your European travels — whether you’re into boating, hiking, swimming or just soaking up the view — these are the lakes I think are truly worthy of your time.

Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), Switzerland
One of the most beautiful lakes in Europe, Lake Geneva — known locally as Lac Léman — offers an exquisite blend of natural beauty, culture and charm.
Stretching from the cosmopolitan city of Geneva on its western edge to the vineyards and villages along the northern shore, this lake is more than just a pretty face.
I especially love the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where vines cascade down steep hillsides toward the glimmering lake.
One of my favorite memories is when I walked with my friend Lynn from Lutry to St. Saphorin, winding through vineyard trails with spectacular views across the water to the French Alps.
It’s one of those stretches where you can feel the good life all around you — wine, beauty, history and heart.
The lakeside towns — Vevey, Montreux, Morges and Nyon to name a few—offer a wonderful mix of art, architecture, local life and relaxed elegance.
Whether you’re exploring a castle, hopping on a paddle steamer or sipping Chasselas wine with a view, Lake Geneva is a destination that invites you to linger.

Lake Bohinj, Slovenia
Tucked inside Triglav National Park in northwestern Slovenia, Lake Bohinj is one of the most beautiful and peaceful lakes in Europe.
And a personal favorite for travelers who crave serenity over selfies. 🙋🏻♀️
Surrounded by forested hills and soaring peaks, it has a quiet, reflective beauty that feels miles away from the bustle of better-known Lake Bled (though it’s just a short drive away).
I spent time walking along the lake’s edge and soaking up the stillness and clear reflections
But it was the trails above the lake that truly surprised me.
The views looking down on the water, framed by mountain ridges and forests, were absolutely stunning
Well worth the uphill effort.
Lake Bohinj invites you to slow down, listen to the birds and simply be.
Whether you’re wandering its peaceful shoreline or venturing up to catch a bird’s-eye view, it’s a place that lingers in your mind long after you’ve left.

Loch Lomond, Scotland
There’s a reason Loch Lomond is one of the most beloved lochs in Scotland.
And one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe.
It’s vast, dramatic and incredibly scenic with wooded shores, scattered islands and Highland hills rising in the distance.
But for me, it’s not just about the views — though they are stunning. I
t’s about the time I’ve spent walking, hiking and just being near it.
I first saw Loch Lomond from Conic Hill while hiking the West Highland Way.
And I’ll never forget that moment.
It was one of those rare, blue-sky days in Scotland.
The sight of this deep blue lake stretching out below me was unforgettable, breathtaking really.
For the next couple of days, the trail kept me close to its shoreline, offering more opportunities to soak in its ever-changing moods.
In 2024 I spent more time with Loch Lomond.
I was staying near Helensburgh where the views from a lookout point of one particular trail were just as fabulous.
I also wandered the grounds of Balloch Castle Country Park which gives you a gentle, parkland perspective on this grand loch.
Whether you see it from above, stroll its shores or sit quietly with a view, Loch Lomond has a way of getting under your skin — and staying there.
On the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond!

Loch Shiel, Scotland
While it may not be as famous as its neighbor, Loch Ness, Loch Shiel easily earns its place among the most beautiful lakes in Europe — especially if you’re drawn to wild, dramatic landscapes.
Surrounded by rugged hills and steeped in history, Loch Shiel feels like a place that hasn’t changed much in centuries.
I’ve seen this dazzling loch from both the Glenfinnan side — where the iconic viaduct arches across the valley — and from the quieter Ardnamurchan side near Acharacle.
And while I haven’t spent as much time here as I’d like, I can tell you this— Loch Shiel is a stunner.
It’s the kind of place that pulls you in and leaves you planning your return trip before you’ve even left.
With its long, narrow shape and dramatic setting, Loch Shiel is one of those lochs that feels deeply Highland — remote, cinematic, and completely unforgettable.

Lake Iseo (Lago d’Iseo), Italy
Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Lake Iseo — or Lago d’Iseo — is the romantic lake of northern Italy.
Quieter, less glitzy and wonderfully authentic, it offers everything you love about the Italian lakes without the crowds.
For me it was love at first sight.
One of the highlights of my visit was taking the ferry out to Monte Isola, the island at the center of the lake.
I hiked up to the Santuario della Ceriola, a small sanctuary perched at the top.
While it’s not not too long of a trail, it does climb up (and up).
But the reward is sweeping views over the lake and the surrounding mountains.
Pure magic!
The lakeside towns are equally enchanting.
Pisogne especially stole my heart, with its relaxed vibe, charming piazzas and lakeside promenade — even in rainy weather.
Whether you’re hiking, sipping an espresso or a glass of good wine or if you’re simply soaking up the view, Lake Iseo is all about slow, soulful travel
And it’s easily one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe for those in the know.

Lake Como, Italy
Ah, Lake Como — the first Italian lake I ever laid eyes on way back in 2008.
I based myself in Bellagio, that picture-perfect town perched where the lake’s three arms meet.
And yes, it’s just as charming as the guidebooks promised.
One of my favorite memories?
Meeting a delightful young Australian couple whom I bumped into multiple times — on the ferry to Varenna, strolling the lanes of Bellagio and then ending the day with a spontaneous dinner together.
While I didn’t tour the famous villas, nor did I see George Clooney, I did spend time wandering the romantic streets of Varenna which is easy to ferry over to.
I hiked up to Castello di Vezio and was rewarded with sweeping views from the tower.
I popped over to Menaggio for a quick meander as well.
But Bellagio truly stole my heart — from its colorful alleyways to the peaceful Pescallo area with its lakeside quiet.
I really need to go back.

Walchensee, Germany
Tucked into the Bavarian Alps, Walchensee is one of Germany’s deepest and most beautiful lakes — and one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe
And yes, that color really is as mesmerizing in person as the photos suggest.
I explored the area in 2024 with my friends, Mindy and Bill, walking some trails along the lake’s edge.
The weather wasn’t exactly cooperating — a little moody, a little misty.
But honestly, that just made Walchensee feel even more dramatic and special.
On a clearer day, we took the Herzogstandbahn cable car up for a bird’s-eye view.
Wow!
Seeing that emerald water cradled by the rugged Bavarian Alps was a total showstopper.
While it’s a popular lake with Germans, it still feels a bit under-the-radar for international visitors.
If you like your beauty with a side of quiet, Walchensee is worth your time.

Möserer See, Austria
Tucked away in the Tyrolean Alps, Möserer See feels like stumbling upon a secret hideaway.
I walked here from the charming alpine town of Seefeld, following a peaceful trail through forests and meadows.
The mountain air was refreshing, carrying the wonderful, earthy scent of pine — one of my favorite smells.
Then almost suddenly, the trees parted to reveal the lake — a small, glimmering jewel cradled by the forest.
Its size only adds to its charm, making it feel intimate and protected.
This is one of those beautiful lakes in Europe that invites you to slow down without even trying.
To linger on a bench or by the shore, breathing in the pine-scented air and letting Austria’s quiet beauty wrap around you like a warm blanket.

Lough Veagh, Ireland
Tucked deep in Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal, Lough Veagh is one of those beautiful lakes in Europe that captures your heart instantly.
Set in a dramatic mountain valley, its still waters reflect the rugged peaks that rise all around.
While it’s not a large lake, it has a majestic presence, with Glenveagh Castle perched elegantly along its shores — like something from a fairytale.
I visited twice during my two-week stay in nearby Dunfanaghy.
Both times I was struck by the peaceful atmosphere — quiet trails, sweeping views and the gentle sound of water lapping against the stones.
In early spring, the vibrant yellow gorse was in full bloom, brightening up even the most overcast Donegal days.
It’s a place that lingers in your memory, calling you back again and again.

Bonus Lochs – Loch Linnhe & Loch Sunart, Scotland
Along the west coast of Scotland, inlets from the sea are called lochs — even though they’re not always the traditional land-locked lakes we usually imagine.
But sometimes, they can feel just like one.
That’s why I’m including these two as bonus lochs on my list.
I spent a couple of months in 2021 (November and December) in Fort William along Loch Linnhe.
And I never got tired of the ever-changing light across its waters.
In true Scottish style, I experienced every kind of weather — sunshine, rain and snow — sometimes all in the same day.
There were moments when the clouds broke just right, revealing sunsets so beautiful they made me stop whatever I was doing to just watch.
In 2023, I spent a week in Strontian along Loch Sunart — a place that’s peaceful, quiet and wonderfully off the grid.
It’s the kind of spot where time slows down.
While some visitors get lucky and spot otters or seals in the loch, wildlife eluded me.
But I did witness a few magnificent sunsets that took my breath away — and had me taking on the midges just to get some pics.
Loch Sunart is a complete hidden gem (and you know I’m not a fan of this term…but it really is.)
I’m ready to experience its magic again soon.

So there are 9 of the most beautiful lakes in Europe.
The beautiful lakes in Europe have a way of stealing your breath — sometimes with towering mountains mirrored in still water, sometimes with quiet shores where time seems to slow.
Each one I’ve visited has its own personality — whether it’s the glamorous sparkle of an Italian lake, the wild drama of a Scottish loch or the tranquil beauty of an alpine tarn.
These waters have been my places to pause — to watch light dance across the surface and to be reminded that nature often saves its most magical moments for those who linger.
Wherever your travels take you, I hope you’ll carve out time to stand at the edge of one of the beautiful lakes in Europe, breathe it all in and let the view stay with you long after you’ve left.
