12 Destinations in Europe That Deserve More Love
Looking for destinations in Europe that deserve more love?
In this episode, I’m sharing 12 places across Europe that I think deserve a spot on more travelers’ wish lists.
These aren’t unknown destinations.
Because, let’s face it, there are very few truly undiscovered places.
Instead I’d describe them as places that often get overshadowed by more famous neighbors.
From wild Irish coastlines and the peaceful English countryside to mountain landscapes in Slovenia, Scotland, Austria, and Italy, these destinations offer a variety of experiences.
Along the way, you’ll find charming villages, fascinating history, outstanding food and wine, and plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors.
All are places I believe deserve more attention from curious travelers.
Some are easy additions to a European itinerary, while others require a bit more patience and a sense of adventure.
And of course, all of them are places I’ve personally visited and would (and have) happily return to.
Join me as I share why places like the Yorkshire Dales, Lake Bohinj, the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Piedmont, the Hochkönig region, and the Mani Peninsula deserve more attention from travelers looking to venture beyond Europe’s usual stops.
Whether you’re actively planning a trip or simply dreaming about future travels, I hope this episode inspires you to discover a few destinations in Europe that deserve more love.

12 Destinations in Europe That Deserve More Love
(For those who prefer to read)
There are definitely places that seem to get all the attention — the Cliffs of Moher, the Cotswolds, Lake Bled, Tuscany, and Santorini.
These are probably some of the destinations that immediately come to mind when we think about traveling in Ireland, England, Italy or Europe in general.
But Europe is filled with so many wonderful places that often get overshadowed by their more famous neighbors.
These aren’t secret destinations.
In today’s world, there are very few truly undiscovered places.
But there are destinations in Europe that deserve more love than they often receive.
So I want to offer up some spots for you to consider.
Some offer dramatic coastlines and mountain scenery.
Others draw you in with charming villages, fascinating history, outstanding food and wine, or opportunities to spend time outdoors.
What they all have in common is that they offer a chance to experience a different side of Europe — one that’s often overlooked in favor of the continent’s biggest tourism stars.

County Donegal, Ireland
Way up in Ireland’s northwest corner, County Donegal feels wilder and more remote than many of the country’s better-known destinations.
Here you’ll find dramatic coastlines, rugged peninsulas, stunning beaches, scenic drives, and wee villages that are far removed from the crowds of Killarney or the Cliffs of Moher.
Some of my favorite places include Slieve League, Fanad Head Lighthouse, Malin Head, and Glenveagh National Park.
It takes a little more effort to get to Donegal, but the reward is a side of Ireland that feels untamed and a bit quieter.
Normandy Beyond the D-Day Beaches, France
Normandy’s D-Day sites are famous for a reason.
And they are worthy of time, for sure.
But there’s much more to this region than its wartime history.
Venture inland and you’ll discover charming villages, medieval towns, beautiful countryside, and lesser-known World War II sites that tell a broader story of the region.
Places like Falaise, Bayeux, and Suisse Normande offer history, outdoor activities, and plenty of Norman character.
It’s a destination that perfectly combines culture, history, and natural beauty in a way that often surprises visitors.
I know it surprised me!

Yorkshire Dales, England
If your idea of England includes rolling green hills, stone walls, cozy pubs, and picture-perfect villages, the Yorkshire Dales may be exactly what you’re looking for.
This beautiful national park is home to a plethora of scenic walking trails, waterfalls, limestone landscapes, and charming villages such as Grassington, Malham, Hawes, and Bainbridge.
While the Cotswolds often steal the spotlight, the Yorkshire Dales offer a wonderfully authentic slice of rural England.
Definitely one of those destinations in Europe that deserves more love.
Lake Bohinj, Slovenia
While Lake Bled tends to be the glamour girl — and receives most of the attention — in Slovenia, nearby Lake Bohinj offers a quieter experience.
Located within Triglav National Park, Bohinj is surrounded by the stunning Julian Alps.
And this lake provides opportunities for hiking, paddling, swimming, and simply enjoying nature.
If you’re looking for beautiful mountain scenery without the crowds, Lake Bohinj deserves a place near the top of your list.

Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Scotland
The Ardnamurchan Peninsula is one of Scotland’s most remote corners.
And that’s exactly why I love it.
Single-track roads wind through forests, along sea lochs, and past tiny settlements where nature is the star.
Wildlife sightings, beautiful sunsets, peaceful walks, and a slower pace of life make this an ideal destination for travelers looking to truly disconnect.
It’s not the easiest place to reach, but that’s part of its charm.
When it comes to destinations in Europe that deserve more love, I think the Ardnamurchan Peninsula is at the top of my list.
Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
Located in southwest Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway remains one of the country’s most overlooked regions.
Visitors will find coastal scenery — including a beautiful lighthouse, rolling hills, charming towns, and the gorgeous Galloway Forest Park, which is also one of the UK’s premier dark-sky destinations.
For travelers seeking a quieter side of Scotland, this region offers plenty of rewards.
And for book lovers, don’t miss Wigtown — Scotland’s book town!

Scottish Borders, Scotland
The Scottish Borders combine beautiful countryside with some of Scotland’s richest history.
Ruined abbeys, historic estates, rolling hills, and charming towns such as Melrose make this region ideal for travelers who enjoy history and gentle exploration.
It’s also surprisingly accessible from Edinburgh, making it an easy addition to many Scotland itineraries.
Add in scenic walking trails and peaceful rural landscapes, and it’s easy to see why this region deserves more attention.
Isle of Mull, Scotland
For those dreaming of a Scottish island experience, Mull offers a wonderful alternative to the overtouristed Isle of Skye.
Colorful Tobermory, fabulous beaches, abundant wildlife, a gorgeous mountainous interior, and easy access to neighboring islands like Iona and Ulva give Mull a wide variety.
It’s one of those destinations in Europe that deserve more love, particularly for travelers seeking a wilder side of Scotland.
While it’s relatively easy to reach by ferry, exploring the island requires a bit more patience.
Most of Mull is connected by single-track roads, making travel slower
But that’s part of the adventure, right?!
For those willing to take their time, the rewards are spectacular scenery, quieter corners, and an island that still feels wonderfully untamed.

Piedmont, Italy
I often describe Piedmont as Tuscany on steroids.
You get the vineyards, hill towns, outstanding food, and incredible wines that people love about Tuscany.
But you also have the dramatic backdrop of the Italian Alps, giving the landscape an extra layer of beauty.
The region is famous for Barolo and Barbaresco wines, along with charming towns like Alba and La Morra.
And it holds some historic treasures just west of the capital city of Turin, Torino.
For food, wine, and history lovers, it’s one of Italy’s secrets.
And it’s a destination in Europe that deserves more love.
Val di Fassa, Italy
Nestled in the Trentino province in the Dolomites, Val di Fassa offers amazing mountain scenery along with a more local feel than some of the region’s better-known destinations.
Charming villages such as Canazei and Campitello di Fassa, hiking trails, gondolas, and dramatic peaks create endless opportunities for exploration and outdoor adventure.
This is a great spot to take in different Dolomite mountain ranges which is one reason why I love it.
It’s also an excellent choice for travelers wanting to experience the beauty of the Dolomites with the Italians as it definitely attracts more Italians than Americans!

Hochkönig Region, Austria
Located in Austria’s Salzburg region, Hochkönig offers stunning alpine scenery without many international visitors.
The area is known for its mountain trails, traditional villages, alpine huts, and beautiful views in every direction.
And some amazing sunsets!
It feels wonderfully authentic and provides an excellent introduction to Austria’s mountain landscapes.
If you’re looking to experience the Austrian Alps alongside locals rather than large tour groups, Hochkönig is a fantastic choice.
Mani Peninsula, Greece
The Mani Peninsula offers a very different side of Greece.
Instead of crowded islands and busy resorts, you’ll find dramatic coastlines, mountain villages, historic stone towers, and beautiful seaside towns.
It requires a little more effort to get here as well as to get around.
But those willing to slow down and venture farther are rewarded with one of Greece’s most fascinating regions.
Few places capture a quieter and more authentic side of Greece quite like the Mani Peninsula.

Final thoughts on destinations in Europe that deserve more love
One of the things I love most about traveling in Europe is that there is always another layer to uncover.
These destinations in Europe that deserve more love may not be the first places that come to mind when planning a trip, but they often become the places you remember most long after you’ve returned home.
While famous destinations are popular for good reason, some of my favorite travel experiences have come from places that sit a little — or even a lot — farther down the list.
Places where the pace is slower, the crowds are smaller, and it feels easier to connect with the landscape, history, local culture, and the people who call these places home.
I hope this list inspires you to look beyond Europe’s usual stops and consider adding one of these destinations to a future trip.
You might just discover a new favorite place.
